A Network Diagram is a graphical way to view tasks, dependencies, and the critical path of your project. Boxes or nodes represent tasks, and dependencies show up as lines that connect those boxes. Add a legend. Automatically change the way the boxes are laid out.
Manually change the way boxes are laid out. Change the line style between boxes. Choose what kind of task information to show. On the Legend tab, decide how you want your legend to look, which pages it should show up on, and then labels you want. Under Box Layoutchoose the box arrangement, alignment, spacing, height, and width that work best for you.
To space boxes evenly, select Fixed in the Height and Width boxes. Keep in mind that grouped tasks are positioned automatically. If you manually reposition a task, you can change the layout of any linked tasks or subtasks associated with it by right-clicking on the task and choosing Layout Related Tasks Now.

Add a task to a Network Diagram. Add multiple tasks at one time. Select the row below where you want a new task to appear. You can set Project to automatically link inserted tasks to the surrounding tasks. The Task Form can help you add several tasks at one time, especially if the tasks have resource assignments and task dependencies.
If you want the task duration to stay fixed even if resource assignments are changed, check Effort driven. You can insert a task between existing tasks by selecting the row below where you want a new task to appear. On the Insert menu, click New Task and then type the task name in the inserted row. The task IDs are automatically renumbered after you insert a task.
You can use an outline to organize your schedule as you enter tasks, or you can wait until you enter all of your project tasks. When you outline a schedule for your project, you simplify its organization so that your project is easier to create, manage, and maintain.

If you are adding several tasks with resource assignments and task dependencies at one time, you may find it helpful to enter this information into your project by using the Task Form view.

If you want the task duration to remain fixed regardless of resource assignments, select the Effort driven check box to make your task effort-driven. The rest is pretty straightforward. Because only Activity 4 has Activity 1 as its immediate predecessor, draw a box representing Activity 4 and draw an arrow from Activity 1 to Activity 4. After adding all the activities to the diagram, draw a box to represent End, and draw an arrow from Activity 4 the last activity you have to complete to that box. I am working on a project with thousands of task and hundreds or summary task. I have tried every possible scenarios reducing the box and spacing in the Layout, and in the print set-up Manually moving the boxes complicates things and too many task to be moved. Is there another solution to this on Ms project or is there a way I can do this better with another software? Why use a Network Diagram view for this? I think a Timeline view would work way better.
To use a Timeline view, try the following:. Apply the Gantt with Timeline view. In the Data section of the View ribbon, click the Outline pick list button and select the Level 1 item to display only the highest-level summary tasks.
I think these are the major summary tasks about which you should report. In the Gantt Chart pane, select all of the Level 1 summary tasks, right-click on one of the tasks, and then select the Add to Timeline item on the shortcut menu. You can also display Level 2 summary tasks, if necessary, and add some of them to the Timeline view as well. If your manager absolutely insists on seeing a Network Diagram view, I would recommend you use the Outline pick list button in the same manner I have documented above, except with the Network Diagram view.

Sorry this didn't help. The network diagram is seldom used, or seldom printed, and one of the reasons is that it takes up a lot of space when printed and most of it is white space. The Gantt chart is much more economical with paper and easier to scale to fit, and contains a lot more information. If your boss wants the network diagram on just a few sheets of paper, perhaps he should buy a large format printer which will print to A0 sheets.
